Once upon a time there was a foolish, confused man who chose an angry woman and an angry preacher to help him vent his anger because of his foolish behavior and confusion over being the grandson of a typical white woman and the son of a deadbeat African father. Then the angry woman and the angry preacher taught the foolish, confused man how they learned to be at peace with themselves. And so the foolish, confused man began by living his life vicariously through the angry woman and the angry preacher.
Then the foolish, confused man decided to become more involved with the “community”, and so he takes his new love of self and begins to impart it upon the masses. He delivers his message of hope and change to many people who live in his newfound city of hope and change that he learned to love because the anger of others had helped him overcome his own pain.
But soon the foolish and confused man foolishly decided that it was not enough for him to simply impart his acquired wisdom on those around him in his own community. He had to take his message to everyone he could. The world must change because he changed, he thought foolishly. The confusion normally created as a result of such a decision was far outweighed by the man’s increasing need to justify his inner peace by convincing others of it.
The man would not be stopped. He arrived at the door of the Senate and quickly studied every move of the men who occupied the chamber for many decades. These men, named Kennedy and Biden, gave the man what he desperately needed, which was acceptance as the great man of wisdom. But Kennedy and Biden were not such wise men after all. Both of them have had problems not getting into trouble. Whether by the use of inappropriate words or by not owning up to automobile accidents in which one’s lover was mysteriously killed, the great mentors of the foolish man are proven to have unwise characteristics.
Soon the man whose hopes of changing the world begin to be challenged. The associations of the man who kept his anger and confusion under control begins to break apart into a thousand tiny sound bites of nonsense. The close knit circle of the angry woman and the angry preacher are not near his side any longer. He is now surrounded by the unwise Kennedy and Biden. The man becomes unnerved by their anger, and he begins to long for the days when instead of wanting to change the world he was still searching for a way to help him resolve his own issues of anger and his confusion as to who he really was.
The man became increasingly less vocal in the days after he surrounded himself by the unwise men. Soon many unwise people began to flock to hear the voice of the once great man who spoke about change, and instead they found the voice of anger. They began to ask themselves why this happened. Why wasn’t the voice of the hope and change being heard any longer, they asked. They began to stomp their feet and bang their fists creating a monstrous sound. Suddenly a sharp sound rose up from below the feet of the great crowds that had gathered demanding where the voice of the man had disappeared to. The sound echoed off the walls and blasted through the ceiling and bounded off mountains and ricocheted off the stratosphere. The Earth shook and people became frightened as rivers ran backward and seas receded. Smoke filled the air and the Earth cooled greatly.
Then a light began to appear and people realized how lucky they were just to be alive. People began to hug one another and appreciate each others lives. For that brief moment, no one talked about change any longer. They were just happy to be alive.
Gone were the voices of Kennedy and Biden, and gone were the evil angry woman and the evil angry preacher. Also gone was the voice of the foolish man who finally learned that there is no need to change and no need to hope if one already appreciates their life.
